North America employees were inspired to connect and give during Applied Materials’ annual Food Drive, resulting in $2.3 million raised for food banks across the U.S. — which will help feed over 1,200 families for a year. During the campaign, employees learned about hunger in their local communities and rallied to give funds online and participate in various fundraising events. Donations totaled more than $1.1 million, which will be matched dollar-for-dollar by the Applied Materials Foundation.

While online giving increased compared to last year’s Food Drive, significant funds were also raised through creative and fun events organized by passionate employee volunteers, including a “Pasta Feed” where executives serve lunch to staff, various “pie throws,” cooking competitions, holiday cube and office gift-wrapping, and challenge grants issued by business executives.

In order to meet the specific needs of individual food banks, some Applied sites also collected and delivered in-kind contributions of nonperishable food for distribution to those in need. Many groups volunteered their time to local food banks including the hundreds of employees and their families who participated in the 22nd Annual Helping Hands Day at Second Harvest Food Bank of Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties, where 6,000 boxes of food were packed in just two hours, providing 227,500 meals for those in need..

The extraordinary success of the Food Drive will make a significant impact in communities across the country, where recipient food banks will use their buying power to maximize donations and feed hungry families, children and senior citizens. In addition to the $1.1 million raised during the Food Drive, employees donated over $3.5 million in 2017 to various causes as part of the company’s year-round charitable giving and matching program.

The success of the Food Drive demonstrates how when we work together, support each other and operate with a sense of purpose, anything is possible. Thank you to all employees who have given their passion, time and hard work to help alleviate hunger and deliver record-setting results! I couldn’t be more proud to work with you.
