At Applied Materials, making a positive contribution to the community is at the foundation of our culture. As our president and CEO Gary Dickerson says, “I strongly believe our responsibility as leaders is to leave the world in a better place.”

Applied considers environmental impacts as part of every significant decision we make throughout our business operations. We refer to our sustainability framework as 1x-100x-10,000x, which represents our own operations (1x), how we work with customers and suppliers (100x), and how our technology can be used to advance sustainability on a global scale (10,000x).

During our annual global EarthWorks campaign, which kicked off April 1, employees are encouraged to learn about and take action dedicated to environmental sustainability. EarthWorks focuses on the 1x part of our sustainability framework and allows employees to learn how they can individually create sustainable habits to benefit our environment and planet.

Across the globe, Applied Materials employees are cleaning up trails (following social distancing protocols, of course!), attending workshops about marine science, creating homemade reusable shopping bags, learning about ways they can become climate advocates in their local communities, and more.

While the campaign remains mostly virtual for the second year in a row, that hasn’t dampened our employees’ creativity. From coast to coast in the U.S., throughout Asia and in communities in Israel and Europe, employees are sharing photos of their neighborhood nature walks and backyard vegetable gardens, favorite articles about sustainability, and ideas about how the company can implement more eco-friendly practices.

Earth Day started in 1970 to diversify, educate and activate the environmental movement worldwide, and has been celebrated each year since then. Join us as we reflect on our stewardship of the planet and take action today—and every day—to Make Possible a Better Future!
