Bill Dally
Chief Scientist & Senior Vice President of Research, NVIDIA
Bill Dally is Chief Scientist and Senior Vice President of Research at NVIDIA, where he leads NVIDIA Research, a global organization of more than 300 researchers advancing artificial intelligence, high-performance computing, graphics and networking technologies. He helps shape NVIDIA’s long-term technology strategy and has been instrumental in driving innovations that power modern AI and accelerated computing. Dally has also served as a member of the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST) since 2021.
Before his current role, Dally served as a Chair of Stanford University’s Computer Science Department and Bell Professor of Engineering, where he led research and academic programs in computer architecture and systems. Before this, he was a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he developed pioneering parallel computing systems including the J-Machine and M-Machine. Earlier in his career, he was a faculty member at the California Institute of Technology, where he introduced wormhole routing, a breakthrough networking technology that became foundational to modern high-performance computing systems. Throughout his career, Dally has made significant contributions to computer architecture, interconnection networks and scalable computing systems that continue to influence today’s data centers and AI infrastructure.
Dally earned a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Virginia Tech, a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University, and a PhD in Computer Science from the California Institute of Technology. He holds more than 120 patents, has authored more than 250 technical publications, and has written four textbooks. His honors include election to the National Academy of Engineering, Fellow status in both ACM and IEEE, the ACM Eckert-Mauchly Award, the IEEE Seymour Cray Award, the ACM Maurice Wilkes Award, and the 2025 Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering. His research interests span computer architecture, networking, artificial intelligence infrastructure and high-performance computing systems.
