Climate and Energy

GOALS

  • 100% of our energy globally comes from renewable sources by 2030, with an interim goal of 100% in the U.S. by 2022
  • 50% reduction in Scope 1 and Scope 2 CO2 emissions by 2030, from 2019 baseline

PROGRESS

  • 57% of our global and 80% of our U.S. electricity comes from renewable sources
  • Scope 1 and Scope 2 CO2 emissions declined 28% in 2021, contributing to a 31% total reduction from our 2019 baseline

Climate Change

Combatting a warming climate requires urgent and collective action. We are committed to significantly reducing our impacts by bringing improved efficiency across our global operations, using cleaner, renewable energy and enabling groundbreaking technology innovation.

In 2020-2022, Applied engaged a third-party to conduct a Climate Risk Assessment to identify key physical and transition risks and opportunities in line with the Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosure (TCFD) recommendations.

Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions

Applied Materials' Scope 1 and 2 emissions totaled 93,272 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (MT CO2e) in 2021, a 28% decrease from 2020.

In early 2022 we completed our Scope 3 emissions inventory, using 2019 as a base year. We will review our Scope 3 methodology each year to refine the calculations, emission factors, data, estimates and underlying assumptions.

We are currently evaluating science-based targets (SBTs) across Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions to ensure our goals are aligned with the latest climate science.

Renewable Energy

Applied is working to achieve our goals of 100% renewable electricity use in the U.S. by 2022 and globally by 2030 by sourcing renewable energy in three ways:

  • On-site solar power generation at our facilities in Austin, Texas; Bangalore, India; Xi'an, China; and Singapore
  • Virtual power purchase agreements and certificates for solar, wind and other renewable energy generating projects.
  • Direct purchase of renewable energy from a utility provider

Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS)

We consider environmental impact in every significant decision we make across our operations. We are guided by the six principles of our Environmental Health and Safety Management System:

1. Maximizing Energy Efficiency and Reducing Emissions

2. Designing for Safety and the Environment

3. Resource Efficiency

4. Ensuring Safe Work Environments

5. Reducing Waste

6. Conserving Natural Resources

Waste and Recycling

Our sites across the globe manage waste reduction, reuse and recycling programs, setting site-specific targets that follow the ISO 14001 framework. Targets are reviewed on an ongoing basis and scored annually, helping us reduce our solid waste and increase the reuse and recycling of product and packaging materials.

Water

While our operations are not high-volume water consumers, Applied is committed to using water efficiently throughout our global operations.

Our efforts to conserve water include:

  • Water recycling and reuse for applications that do not require potability
  • Designing water-efficient products
  • Rainwater collection for use in landscaping or non-production needs
  • Drought-tolerant landscaping and smart irrigation
