Unlike TFT- LCDs where the display is illuminated by a backlight, each pixel of an OLED displayproduces light directly. This makes OLEDs more power-efficient and much thinner. But the industry has been unable to produce large area OLEDs at a consumer-friendly cost. Only today’s OLED smart phones and tablet PC’s use LTPS driven backplanes, but this will change as LTPS PECVD technology scale up. Future advances in MO-based TFT stability is expected to enable metal oxide adoption in large area OLED TV’s and monitors.
