Technology Review Names Applied Materials Among Most Innovative Companies in the World

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Technology Review announced today that Applied Materials, Inc. placed on the 2011 TR50, the publication’s annual list of the 50 most innovative companies in the world, for the second consecutive year. Applied Materials was recognized for enabling the proliferation of powerful computing devices through machines that make chips with ever-smaller features without rising in price.

“Innovations from Applied Materials are helping to drive key advances in computing, said Jason Pontin, Editor in Chief and Publisher, Technology Review.  “Semiconductor manufacturers rely on the company’s machines to produce chips at ever-smaller scales, and display makers use its equipment to create complex and responsive touch screens.”

The Technology Review 50 list evaluates private and public technology companies on their business model, strategies for deploying and scaling up technologies, and the likelihood of success.

The TR50 is chosen by the editors of Technology Review and spans the Energy, Transportation, Computing & Communications, Web & Digital Media, Materials and Biomedicine sectors.  Editors looked for those that over the last year have demonstrated their superiority at inventing technology and using it both to grow as businesses and to transform how we live. They identified the companies that have the most promising technologies, whether they are giant corporations or fledgling startups with initial venture capital investments. Then they examined their business models, their strategies for deploying and scaling up their technologies, and the likelihood that they will succeed.
