Dr. Mark R. Pinto is executive vice president and general manager of the Energy and Environmental Solutions (EES) business at Applied Materials, Inc. Dr. Pinto focuses on growing the company’s global solar business and expanding into new energy-related applications for nanomanufacturing technologies such as solid-state lighting and advanced batteries. Under his leadership, the EES business has grown to more than $1.4B in revenue in fiscal 2010 and has become the leading supplier of PV manufacturing equipment world-wide. Dr. Pinto also serves as the chairman of the investment committee of Applied Ventures, the company’s in-house venture capital arm that plays a key role in the company’s strategy to evaluate future growth drivers.
Dr. Pinto previously was corporate technology officer from 2004 to 2010, where he drove Applied's overall technology strategy, advanced R&D programs and new business development. He first joined Applied as a senior vice president in January 2004 and initiated the company’s efforts in solar and solid-state lighting, leading to the formation of EES. He previously also had responsibilities for the Display business, and led the acquisition of Applied Films which expanded the company’s offerings successfully into color filters and touch screens.
Prior to joining Applied, Dr. Pinto spent 19 years with the research division of Bell Laboratories and later the Lucent Microelectronics group where he was involved in R&D and management of IC technology, optoelectronics and network product design. He was named a Bell Labs Fellow, the company’s highest technical honor. In 2010, he was elected into the National Academy of Engineering for his contributions to modeling and manufacturing technologies for semiconductor devices, and in 2008, he was the recipient of the IEEE’s prestigious J.J. Ebers award, both considered to be two of the technical community’s most prestigious awards. Dr. Pinto has authored or co-authored more than 150 papers and has nine patents. He is also a Fellow of the IEEE and served as an Adjunct Professor at Yale University. Dr. Pinto received bachelor’s degrees from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and a master’s degree and Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Stanford University.
