State-of-the-Art Laboratory for Semiconductor Technology Development and Customer Collaboration

Chip fabrication is perhaps the most complex manufacturing environment in existence. It takes several hundred steps to make a chip, and each different chip type will have its own unique sequence. For chip manufacturers, understanding and characterizing the interactions between different steps is critical to rapidly achieving high production yields, improving device performance and enabling the advanced chips of tomorrow.

The Maydan Technology Center, located at Applied Materials’ Sunnyvale campus in California, is the heart of Applied’s innovation engine and technology leadership and offers a competitive advantage to both Applied and our customers. The $1 billion center provides a unique collaboration platform for Applied and its customers to accelerate cycles of learning and enable faster transitions to new technologies, and reduced risk for customers by identifying strategic inflections in device manufacturing and customer high value problems early on. The center contains a complete suite of the 300mm wafer fabrication equipment needed to examine and optimize the chip fabrication process.

In addition to Applied tools, the center also houses third party lithography and metrology systems for comprehensive fab operation and process sequences to be run 24/7, serving as a pilot line for the entire manufacturing process. Applied is the only chip equipment supplier to offer this unique capability enabling Applied Materials’ customers to test-drive integrated process sequences using their actual device wafers well before final installation of the process equipment at their manufacturing site.
