Bipolar transistors are either NPN or PNP transistors. An NPN transistor consists of two n-regions separated by a thin p-region, while a PNP transistor has an n-region between p-regions. A MOS transistor can either be NMOS or PMOS and is widely used in integrated circuits since it is smaller and has lower power consumption. An NMOS transistor has a p-type substrate and has an n-type source and drain. A PMOS transistor has an n-type substrate and has a p-type source and drain. A CMOS, or complementary metal oxide semiconductor, is a device consisting of paired NMOS and PMOS transistors and is used in most of today’s microchips and computer memory.
