Even though the LCD flat-panel display is a fairly new technology, the core technology that enables it, the liquid crystal, was discovered over 100 years ago. But, it was not until 1986, when RCA began to release consumer products such as numeric displays in LCD calculators and digital wristwatches that this technology was available in limited quantities and at high cost. Today, devices such as portable DVD players, cell phones and flat-panel televisions are much more affordable and commonplace and are available for sale worldwide. |
