Chris Moran is corporate vice president and general manager at Applied Materials, Inc. He is responsible for the company’s strategy group including Applied Ventures and the Office of the Chief Economist as well as Corporate Affairs, Sales Operations and Marketing.

Mr. Moran previously was corporate vice president and general manager of Applied Ventures, the company’s venture capital fund, and was responsible for the development and management of investments in early stage, privately held companies.

Since joining Applied Materials in 1984, he has held a number of positions in division management, engineering, product management and marketing, including general manager of the Metal Etch Division, Etch Product Business Group, vice president and division general manager of the company’s Mask Products Division, and vice president of Corporate Marketing.

Prior to joining Applied Materials, Mr. Moran served as a member of the technical staff at Hughes Aircraft Co., and Atari Computer Corporation. Mr. Moran received his bachelor of science and master of science degrees in mechanical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Pravin Narwankar, Ph.D.

Chief Technology Officer, Applied Materials in India Investment Manager, Applied Ventures

Dr. Pravin Narwankar has a dual role as chief technology officer (CTO) for Applied Materials in India and investment manager for Applied Ventures in Applied Materials Corporate Business Development group since 2006. As CTO, his responsibilities include driving research and development for the India Global Development Capability center that provides engineering and software support services to Applied Materials locations around the world, as well as serving as the local Corporate Technology Council representative. His investment manager responsibilities include identifying new business and startup investment opportunities and engaging with local entrepreneurs and venture firms.

Dr. Narwankar has been with Applied Materials for more than 11 years and has held a number of positions of increasing responsibility in research and product development for front end and back end of line products. He has more than 20 patents and 50 published articles on product development, materials synthesis and process integration.

Dr. Narwankar received Bachelor of Technology and Master of Technology degrees in metallurgical engineering and materials science from the India Institute of Technology Bombay and holds a doctorate degree in materials science and engineering from the University of California, Berkeley.

Eileen Tanghal

Eileen Tanghal joined Applied Ventures in 2008 and was appointed Head of Applied Ventures in October, 2011.

Ms. Tanghal is currently board of directors observer at Aventa Systems and BT Imaging. She also manages Applied’s investments in Illumitex, Kateeva and Plextronics . She led Applied Ventures’ investment in Liquavista and served as a board observer director for the company until it was acquired by Samsung in January, 2011.

Eileen has 14 years of experience working with technology companies in the US and Europe including 10 years of combined financial and corporate venture capital experience and 4 years working directly within venture capital backed startups. Prior to joining Applied, she served as an investment director in the London office of Kennet Partners, where she led the firm's investment in fabless semiconductor companies Sequans Communications (Ticker:SQNS) and Wireless Audio IP, aka “STS” (acquired by SMSC). Prior to this, Ms. Tanghal was an investment associate with Amadeus Capital Partners Limited, where she worked closely with portfolio companies including Plastic Logic Limited., SPI Lasers (acquired by JDS Uniphase), Forth Dimension Displays (acquired by Kopin) and Artimi.

Prior to entering the venture capital industry, she was one of the first ten employees, at PDF Solutions, specializing in semiconductor device design and fabrication. PDF Solutions subsequently went public in 2001 (Ticker: PDFS).

Ms. Tanghal holds a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering and computer science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and an MBA from the London Business School.

Anand Kamannavar

Anand Kamannavar joined Applied Ventures in 2006 and has over 14 years of experience in the technology and venture capital industry. At Applied Ventures, Mr. Kamannavar focuses on identifying and managing investments in area of Cleantech, Materials and India. Mr. Kamannavar serves as Applied's board observer in EnPhase Energy, Adesto Technologies, Tessolve, Kotak Urja, Infinite Power Solutions and Iosil Energy.

Prior to joining Applied Ventures, Mr. Kamannavar worked at Atlas Ventures and Arch Development Partners looking at startups in the broader Alternative energy, Internet, Web 2.0, Media, Software and Medical sectors. Prior to his career in venture capital, Anand held various engineering and business development roles with Hewlett-Packard's server group in Richardson, TX where he was awarded key US patents. He also co-founded Precision Information Systems which provides financial data and tools to leading financial institutions like Ameritrade, New York Life and Intuit.

Mr. Kamannavar is a frequent panelist and judge at industry conferences and business plan competitions and received a MBA with Honors from the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business and holds graduate and undergraduate degrees in Electrical and Electronics Engineering.

Tony Chao

Associate Investment Manager Applied Ventures

Tony Chao joined Applied Ventures in 2007. Tony brings with him over a decade worth of experience in technology entrepreneurship and venture capital. At Applied Ventures, Tony is focused on solid state lighting, energy storage, and opportunities in China. Tony serves as Applied's board observer in Tera-Barrier Films, Enki Technologies, and Semprius.

Prior to arriving at Applied Ventures, Mr. Chao was affiliated with Mustang Ventures based in Shanghai, China. Before working in venture capital, Mr. Chao served in leadership roles at a number of startups in the Boston area: Director of Engineering at Cymfony (acquired by TNS Media Intelligence) and developer at Lobby7 (acquired by ScanSoft/Nuance).

Mr. Chao holds bachelor of science and masters of engineering in electrical engineering and computer science degrees and a bachelor of science in management science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and an MBA from the Harvard Business School.

Brian Hubert, Ph.D.

Dr. Brian Hubert joined Applied Ventures in 2007. Dr. Hubert's current investment focus is on nanomaterials, semiconductors, power electronics and energy harvesting. Brian is Board Observer for portfolio companies ClearEdge Power, ActaCell, MTPV, and Innolume.

Prior to Applied Ventures, Dr. Hubert was a member of the High-tech and Health Care practices at McKinsey & Company.

Prior to joining McKinsey, Dr. Hubert co-founded Kovio, Inc., a Kleiner Perkins-backed nanotechnology and RFID startup which is pioneering semiconductor fabrication using liquid silicon and novel printing methods. Brian has served Kovio in several capacities as Chief Technology Officer, President, and observing member on the Board of Directors.

Dr. Hubert is a winner of the Lemelson-MIT Prize for excellence in invention and innovation. Articles and world-wide broadcast media about Dr. Hubert and his wide range of innovations have appeared in USA Today, New York Times, Associated Press, PR Newswire, Wired.com, and CNN Sci-Tech.

Dr. Hubert earned his bachelor of science, master of science, and Ph.D. degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Mechanical Engineering with a research focus on superconductors and nano-engineering.

Joseph Jeong

Dr. Joseph Jeong joined Applied Ventures in 2011. Dr. Jeong’s current focus is on energy storage, lighting and display. He is currently working with portfolio companies ActaCell and Infinite Power Solutions.

Prior to Applied Ventures, Dr. Jeong interned as an analyst with ARCH Venture Partners, a VC firm focused on life and physical sciences.

Prior to ARCH Venture Partners, Dr. Jeong was a cleantech engineer at Samsung SDI and SB LiMotive, working on the research and development of automotive lithium-ion batteries and fuel cell systems.

Dr. Jeong earned his bachelor of science, master of science, and Ph.D. degrees from the Georgia Institute of Technology, majoring in Aerospace engineering with a research focus on structural dynamics and acoustics. Dr. Jeong also earned his MBA from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business.
