Dr. Omkaram (Om) Nalamasu is senior vice president and chief technology officer (CTO) for Applied Materials. He brings extensive experience and passion to the role of CTO, where he is leading the development of new product pipelines, securing government funding for key strategic projects and building a world-class team to maintain Applied Materials’ technology leadership in the industries it serves and enable growth into new markets. Dr. Nalamasu is also the president of Applied Ventures, LLC, the venture capital fund of Applied Materials, overseeing the financial and strategic investments in early and growth-stage privately held companies.
A world-renowned expert in materials science and technology and one of our industry’s respected forward thinkers, Dr. Nalamasu has championed a renewed focus on the company’s innovation culture through various internal development programs and open innovation methods. He has strengthened Applied Materials’ strategic relationships with universities and research institutes around the world including IIT Bombay.
Dr. Nalamasu joined Applied Materials in 2006, after serving as vice president of research at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI). He has held key research and development leadership positions at AT&T Bell Laboratories, Bell Laboratories/Lucent Technologies, and Agere Systems, Inc., and was director of Bell Laboratories' Nanofabrication Research Laboratory, MEMS and Waveguides Research, and Condensed Matter Physics organizations.
His research interests include nanomanufacturing, nanopatterning, electronic and photonic materials, and lithography, with special emphasis on applying patterning and materials know-how for device fabrication for electronics, photonics and energy applications.
Dr. Nalamasu has made seminal contributions to the fields of optical lithography and polymeric materials science and technology. He has received numerous awards, authored more than 180 papers, review articles and books, and holds more than 35 patents.
Dr. Nalamasu is a member of the board of directors of Semiconductor Research Corporation and The Tech Museum, and serves on the National Academies Panel on Materials Science and Engineering. He sits on several technical advisory boards and university advisory committees, and received his Ph.D. from the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada.

Eileen Tanghal joined Applied Ventures in 2008 and was appointed Head of Applied Ventures in October, 2011.
Ms. Tanghal is currently board of directors observer at Aventa Systems and BT Imaging. She also manages Applied’s investments in Illumitex, Kateeva and Plextronics . She led Applied Ventures’ investment in Liquavista and served as a board observer director for the company until it was acquired by Samsung in January, 2011.
Eileen has 16 years of experience working with technology companies in the US and Europe including 10 years of combined financial and corporate venture capital experience and 4 years working directly within venture capital backed startups. Prior to joining Applied, she served as an investment director in the London office of Kennet Partners, where she led the firm's investment in fabless semiconductor companies Sequans Communications (Ticker:SQNS) and Wireless Audio IP, aka “STS” (acquired by SMSC). Prior to this, Ms. Tanghal was an investment associate with Amadeus Capital Partners Limited, where she worked closely with portfolio companies including Plastic Logic Limited., SPI Lasers (acquired by JDS Uniphase), Forth Dimension Displays (acquired by Kopin) and Artimi.
Prior to entering the venture capital industry, she was one of the first ten employees, at PDF Solutions, specializing in semiconductor device design and fabrication. PDF Solutions subsequently went public in 2001 (Ticker: PDFS).
Ms. Tanghal holds a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering and computer science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and an MBA from the London Business School.
Tony Chao joined Applied Ventures in 2007. Tony brings with him over a decade worth of experience in technology entrepreneurship and venture capital. At Applied Ventures, Tony is focused on solid state lighting, energy storage, and opportunities in China. Tony serves as Applied's board observer in Tera-Barrier Films, Enki Technologies, Adesto Technologies, Halation Photonics, Inpria, and Semprius.
Prior to arriving at Applied Ventures, Mr. Chao was affiliated with Mustang Ventures based in Shanghai, China. Before working in venture capital, Mr. Chao served in leadership roles at a number of startups in the Boston area: Director of Engineering at Cymfony (acquired by TNS Media Intelligence) and developer at Lobby7 (acquired by ScanSoft/Nuance).
Mr. Chao holds bachelor of science and masters of engineering in electrical engineering and computer science degrees and a bachelor of science in management science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and an MBA from the Harvard Business School.
Rajesh Swaminathan joined Applied Materials in 2009. Mr. Swaminathan has a dual role with the CTO Office and Applied Ventures. At Applied Ventures, Mr. Swaminathan focuses on investments in Energy Storage, Power Electronics, Smart Grid and Display. He has led Applied Materials’ investments into companies working on Materials and Energy Storage.
Prior to joining Applied Materials, he worked at Third Point LLC developing the firm’s venture and public investment strategy in Cleantech. While at Third Point, he led the firm’s investment in R2Semi and managed the investment in Enphase Energy.
Mr. Swaminathan has previously worked at Deutsche Bank’s investment banking group as an Associate in renewable energy. At Bell Labs, he has held senior positions, driving partnerships with several Nanotech, Optical, and III-V startups. He also led the DFR program for Lucent’s 10Gb/s and 40Gb/s telecommunication systems.
Mr. Swaminathan holds an MBA from Harvard, an MS (MEMS/ Nanotech) from the University of Maryland at College Park, and a Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engg. from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras where he was awarded the President of India medal for excellence.
Dr. Joseph Jeong joined Applied Ventures in 2011. Dr. Jeong’s current focus is on energy storage, lighting and display. He is currently working with portfolio companies ActaCell and Infinite Power Solutions.
Prior to Applied Ventures, Dr. Jeong interned as an analyst with ARCH Venture Partners, a VC firm focused on life and physical sciences.
Prior to ARCH Venture Partners, Dr. Jeong was a cleantech engineer at Samsung SDI and SB LiMotive, working on the research and development of automotive lithium-ion batteries and fuel cell systems.
Dr. Jeong earned his bachelor of science, master of science, and Ph.D. degrees from the Georgia Institute of Technology, majoring in Aerospace engineering with a research focus on structural dynamics and acoustics. Dr. Jeong also earned his MBA from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business.
Taejoon Park joined Applied Ventures in 2012. Mr. Park’s current investment focus is on cleantech and materials. Taejoon is currently working with portfolio companies Banyan Energy and Iosil Energy.
Prior to joining Applied Ventures, Mr. Park was a senior consultant at Monitor Group’s Seoul office, where he performed diverse aspects of strategy projects for large Korean conglomerates in the cleantech, oil & gas, electronics, and mobile sectors.
Mr. Park holds his bachelor of science in electrical engineering from Yonsei University in Seoul, Korea and an MBA from the Haas School of Business, University of California Berkeley.
Roopan Aulakh joined Applied Ventures in 2012. Her current focus is on investment opportunities in India.
Prior to joining Applied Ventures, Ms. Aulakh worked as a consultant in the market expansion practice of Zinnov, a consulting firm focused on technology sector. Prior to Zinnov, Ms. Aulakh was a Design Engineer at Freescale Semiconductor and Wipro Technologies, where she focused on System-on-Chip and Intellectual Properties in networking domain.
Ms. Aulakh received a Bachelor of Technology degree in Electronics & Communication Engineering from National Institute of Technology Jalandhar and an MBA from Indian School of Business.
Lou has 43 years experience in semiconductor manufacturing and semiconductor equipment engineering, applications, sales, marketing and product development.
Lou joined Applied in 1979 when the entire company was in Building 1. He was Program manager for the 1st generation etch technology then led the acquisition team for Lintott Engineering which became the Applied Implant Division. Lou lived in Horsham, UK for 4 years where he directed the development and launch of the Precision 9000 implanter. Lou left Applied Materials in 1988 and has held VP level positions at Advanced Energy, MRS Technology and TEL. He joined Varian in 2010 and returned to Applied with the Varian acquisition.
He is experienced in the disruptive technology commercialization process, business development, acquisitions, and international business. He is now working with Applied Ventures as a Venture Advisor concentrating on emerging companies on the East Coast.

Anand Kamannavar joined Applied Ventures in 2006 and has over 14 years of experience in the technology and venture capital industry. At Applied Ventures, Mr. Kamannavar focuses on identifying and managing investments in area of Cleantech, Materials and India. Mr. Kamannavar serves as Applied's board observer in EnPhase Energy, Adesto Technologies, Tessolve, Kotak Urja, Infinite Power Solutions and Iosil Energy.
Prior to joining Applied Ventures, Mr. Kamannavar worked at Atlas Ventures and Arch Development Partners looking at startups in the broader Alternative energy, Internet, Web 2.0, Media, Software and Medical sectors. Prior to his career in venture capital, Anand held various engineering and business development roles with Hewlett-Packard's server group in Richardson, TX where he was awarded key US patents. He also co-founded Precision Information Systems which provides financial data and tools to leading financial institutions like Ameritrade, New York Life and Intuit.
Mr. Kamannavar is a frequent panelist and judge at industry conferences and business plan competitions and received a MBA with Honors from the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business and holds graduate and undergraduate degrees in Electrical and Electronics Engineering.

Suraj Rengarajan is the India CTO based in Applied Materials Bangalore, India. He started his career in Applied Materials, Santa Clara in 1997, where he held different roles ranging from process engineering, technology, program management, and product marketing for thin film deposition and metallization for interconnects, silicides and novel memories.
He moved to India in 2007 to set up the solar group for Applied Materials in India. Later he headed the engineering group for dielectric deposition.
Suraj holds a B.Tech from IIT Madras in Metallurgical Engg, and earned his M.S and PhD from the University of Texas at Austin in Materials Science. He has over 10 US patents and holds more than 15 publications.
