Improving The Way People Live
At Applied Materials, we apply nanomanufacturing technology to improve the way people live. We also support others who are improving lives on a global scale. For the sixth year, Applied Materials has been the presenting sponsor of the Tech Awards, an international awards program that honors innovators who apply cutting-edge technology to benefit humanity.
Among this year’s laureate winners are companies or innovators who addressed pressing social needs such as waste management, water purification, digital archiving of precious historical documents, disease reduction and the creation of technologies that enable people with disabilities.
Inspiring global engagement, the Tech Awards invite innovators to submit solutions in the following areas: education, equality, environment, health and economic development. At the awards gala, held at The Tech Museum of Innovation in San Jose, California, five laureates are honored in each category, and five laureates receive $50,000 to further research and discovery.
In addition to the Tech Laureate Awards, one individual is recognized with the James C. Morgan Global Humanitarian Award, named for Applied Materials Chairman of the Board. This top award honors individuals whose broad vision and leadership are helping to address humanity’s greatest challenges. This year’s Morgan Global Humanitarian Award was presented to Bill Gates.

Environmental Commitment
Applied Materials has had a long-standing commitment to operating in a manner that sustains the environment and protects the health and safety of workers, customers and neighboring communities.
In September, Applied expanded that commitment by announcing its entry into the rapidly growing solar photovoltaic equipment market. The company expects to bring significant change to the industry by providing lower cost per watt solutions for solar manufacturing customers - ultimately making solar power a significant global energy source.
Through the Applied Solar Business Group, Applied is focused on driving down manufacturing costs using high-productivity tools, a core competency Applied has demonstrated in both semiconductor and flat panel display manufacturing.

In addition, Applied Materials China recently became the company’s fifth region to receive the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 14001 certification. This achievement further positions Applied Materials as an environmental leader in the industry. The organization has set specific environmental targets such as increasing its recycling rate and conserving energy. Other regional operations that have received ISO 14001 certification are: Implant Technology in Horsham, England; Austin Manufacturing Operations; Process Diagnostics and Control in Rehovot, Israel; and Applied Materials Taiwan.

Developing Young Minds
Applied’s community commitment to support education and encourage student learning was demonstrated recently with several global programs that aim to stretch young minds and spur innovation.
England—Applied executives from the company’s Horsham office dedicated the new Business and Enterprise Center at the Forest School (Horsham Boys School). The new Center, funded by Applied Materials, local businesses and the government, will provide a modern engineering and IT center for the school and the community. Technology, engineering and computer courses will be offered to students, with evening courses available for the surrounding community.
Taiwan—Applied Materials Taiwan hosted the Semiconductor Young Talent Camp to foster interest and deepen understanding of the semiconductor industry. Over 200 college students submitted papers reviewed by a selection committee comprised of Applied Materials senior product managers and university deans. Fifty students were selected to attend a three-day semiconductor symposium to learn more about semiconductor design, production and the overall business climate. Twenty elite students were selected to visit Applied Materials’ corporate headquarters in Santa Clara, California, and meet with CEO Mike Splinter.
China—Applied Materials China has created the Xi’an Innovation Fund to support universities and other research facilities in carrying out microelectronics and information technology research and software development. The fund will provide scholarships to students in the field as well as university research grants.

Employees Wrap Up Incredible Year of Giving
Applied Materials and its North America employees entered into the annual tradition of seasonal giving by pledging a record $2.087 million to the community through the employee giving program. During the September open-enrollment period, employees made pledges to local nonprofit agencies, schools and selected international philanthropic projects.
In addition, Applied and its North America employees donated four million pounds of food to needy families across North America during the 2006 Food Drive held in December. Applied sites used inventive techniques to raise awareness and money for the annual campaign. Fundraising activities included a 5K fun run, softball tournament, bake sales and auctions.
Many nonprofits and schools also benefited from our employee talent. Through the Volunteer Time Grant program, North America Applied Materials employees were able to direct about $50,000 to selected charities in 2006. Employees donating 20 service hours of personal time to eligible charities are able to log hours and direct a matching grant of $250 to their chosen organization. The volunteer program encourages employee involvement and provides additional resources to the communities in which we have a presence.
