Tech Awards: Nominations Welcome
The Tech Awards, presented by Applied Materials, is an international program that honors innovators from around the world who are applying technology to benefit humanity. The Awards are presented annually in association with other sponsors to recognize the best of those who are utilizing innovative technology solutions to address the most urgent critical issues facing our planet in the areas of education, equality, environment, health and economic development.
Among the 25 recipients of the 2007 awards are organizations that supply low-cost, sustainable hybrid wind and solar electric systems to marginalized communities; invent technology to test for infectious diseases quickly and accurately; and engage youth worldwide in an online platform for social change.
Nominations for the 2008 Tech Museum Awards will be accepted through April 7, 2008. Criteria and additional information are available at www.techawards.org

Employees Rally to Make a Difference
Employees around the globe rallied to make a positive social contribution in their local communities during the last quarter. Demonstrating Applied's commitment to locations in which we do business, Applied employees in India and China participated in the first corporate blood drives ever held in their regions. In Japan, volunteers took to the streets to conduct neighborhood cleanups near Applied offices on a regular basis.
In North America, employees generously contributed time and talent, resulting in more than 14,000 hours of volunteer time being donated in 2007 to support charities and schools of interest to employees. Through the Employee Matching Gift Program, $2.6 million– including $1.2 million in matching contributions by the Applied Materials Foundation – were raised for nonprofit agencies and schools. In addition, Applied's annual holiday food drive raised more than $1 million – enough to provide over 2 million meals through local food banks in 25 communities

Semiconductor Exhibit Opens in Taiwan
The new “First Encounter with Semiconductors” exhibit opened at the National Taiwan Science Education Center (NTSEC) in Taipei with the support of Applied Materials Taiwan. The interactive exhibit, which targets 5 th -12 th grade students as well as the general public, includes games to help visitors learn semiconductor theories and features a retrofitted Precision 5000® , which reflects Applied's historical role in Taiwan's still-growing semiconductor industry.
Joining Applied in showcasing their products in the exhibit are customers Intel Taiwan, TSMC and MXIC, as well as fabless companies, Mediateck and Sunplus. More than 150,000 people are expected to visit the National Taiwan Science Education Center each year.

Applied Contributions Recognized
Applied Materials' commitment to social responsibility and environmental sustainability has been recognized recently by a diversity of organizations including:
- Keep Austin Beautiful, a program that empowers Austin citizens to take personal responsibility for enhancing their community's involvement, was honored by Keep America Beautiful due largely to a program partially supported by Applied Materials. The Green Teens program provides environmental education and inspires environmental stewardship and youth leadership in five schools in underserved Austin neighborhoods.
- The Guangming Daily, one of China 's most influential newspapers, which presented a corporate social responsibility award to Applied for its continued contributions to the Chinese community and its support of education.
- Taiwan 's Hsinchu Science Industrial Park Administration (HSIPA), for the green adoption project. Taiwan Vice President Lu presented the award to Applied's Environmental, Health and Safety manager in the celebration festival for HSIPA's 27th anniversary.
- The Texas Business Partnership Award from the Texas Association of Partners in Education, for Applied's philanthropic work with the Manor Independent School District. Applied's Austin manufacturing site is in this district, just east of Austin .
- The Platts Global Energy Awards, with its Green Energy Innovator of the Year for our company's groundbreaking work on the Applied SunFab™ Thin Film Line which, according to judges, demonstrates an innovative solution to an important global challenge and reflects Applied's commitment to environmental responsibility and the advancement of solar power around the world

New Leader of Community Affairs Announced
Mark Walker has recently joined Applied Materials to direct the company's worldwide philanthropic efforts and serve as executive director of the Applied Materials Foundation.
Mark comes from United Way Silicon Valley, where he served as president and CEO since 2002 leading the organization's strategic planning, fundraising and leadership giving and fund distribution activities. Under his direction, United Way transitioned from a traditional fundraising organization to a dynamic community solutions provider focused on measurable results. Prior to joining United Way Silicon Valley, Mark served as general manager for external affairs at SBC Communications/Pacific Bell and area manager for external affairs and community relations at Southwestern Bell Telephone Company.
