Dr. Mark Pinto leads Applied Materials’ Energy and Environmental Solutions (EES) group which is focused on developing and manufacturing solar technology to achieve the Company’s goal of driving down the cost-per-watt of solar generated electricity and ensuring commercial scale deployment of solar installations. He has rapidly established Applied Materials as the leading equipment supplier to the solar industry. In less than two year’s from the official announcement of the Company’s entry into the solar industry, Applied Materials has signed over $3 billion in contracts for its thin film SunFab Production Line, which has received recognition from several industry groups including the Wall Street Journal’s 2008 Technology Innovation Award. In addition Dr. Pinto has led efforts to build a significant crystalline silicon solar business now shipping at over $200 million per quarter through internal developments and approximately $1 billion in acquisitions.

As the Company’s chief technology officer, in addition to managing the EES group, Dr. Pinto drives the overall Applied technology roadmap across all business and product groups. He is responsible for spearheading advanced R&D programs in semiconductors, displays and energy and environment programs and driving new business opportunities. These efforts have been focused around Applied’s core competencies in nanomanufacturing technologies, out of which came the initial solar vision and strategy as well as other growth areas including energy efficient glass and solid state lighting. In addition, Dr. Pinto serves as the Chairman of Applied Ventures, the Company’s in-house venture capital arm which plays a key role in the Company’s strategy to evaluate future growth drivers through investments and partnerships with early stage companies.

Prior to joining Applied Materials in 2004, Dr. Pinto spent 19 years with the research division of Bell Laboratories and the Lucent Microelectronics Group, which later spun off as Agere Systems. He was named a Bell Labs Fellow, the company’s highest technical honor. In 2008 he was honored with the IEEE prestigious J.J. Ebers award, which is considered to be one of the technical community’s most prestigious awards. Dr. Pinto has authored or co-authored more than 150 papers and has nine patents. He is also a Fellow of the IEEE and served as an Adjunct Professor at Yale University. Dr. Pinto received bachelor’s degrees from Rensselear Polytechnic Institute and a master’s degree and Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Stanford University.
