In a cleanroom, contaminants that are as small as one-tenth of a micron are detrimental to the chipmaking process. One micron is one thousandth of one millimeter. For comparison, the average human hair is around 100 microns in diameter. Household dust can be one-half to 40 microns in size, and smoke particles can be as large as 1 micron.
